Advent - Our wake up call
May I take this opportunity, as we begin the new liturgical year, to wish every parishioner at St John's a very happy New Year. I would like to thank everyone for their contribution in making St John's a dynamic and visionary community that is seeking to serve the Kingdom of God in the heart of our City. The new season of Advent gives us a chance to reflect on the noble calling that we have as Christians. Each of us is called by the Lord to value ourselves as part of God's great creation. We are called too to value each other and welcome one another as equal members of God's family. Advent reminds that the Church is a place of welcome to all persons, whatever our nationality, our gender, our colour or our difference of understanding. In today's world that often seeks to separate or exclude people, the Church stands by the gospel vales of Jesus that regards everyone as worthy of God's love and mercy.
As we prepare for Christmas let us wake up to our calling to offer a welcome to everyone, but especially those who feel rejected through their pain and brokenness.
In our planning and preparation for Advent and Christmas St John's seeks to offer a wide range of events to our City. May I encourage parishioners to invite a friend or neighbour to accompany them to Church and experience the love and peace from Jesus, the babe of Bethlehem, who now seeks to live in the hearts of his people. May you too enjoy reading our Advent booklet and find new inspiration in the ways of faith.
