"Dear Parishioners and Visitors. Our Christmas and New Year message remembers that this year is very special, our 150th celebration of the dedication of our church, October 5th 1863. This season is described as the festival of lights and recalls the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. His light came into the darkness of a world under Roman occupation for God's people. They felt oppressed, discouraged and lacking in hope for the future. Born in a stable, the king of kings came to set the people free from darkness and establish the kingdom of light and peace.

Following his birth Jesus underwent thirty years of humble existence as the son of a carpenter.

At the age of thirty he emerges into his public ministry and begins his reign of light with the Jubilee Proclamation, "the spirit of the Lord is upon me, he sent me to proclaim liberty to captives, sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim a year of favour from the lord".

In our Jubilee Year (1863 – 2013) we invite the light of Jesus to shine brightly upon us, to raise us up to be shining bearers of his light for the City of Bath. We gain our inspiration too, from the many former parishioners who dedicated and sacrificed themselves to build the lovely community of St John's. A special thank you to our former priests, the LSU Sisters and our teachers and catechists of St John's Primary School, St Gregory's College, Prior Park and the Downside community.
The light that was lit at our foundation burns brightly, may we cherish this light and let our light shine for all to see. A special welcome to all of those who visit St John's and the City of Bath. May you return home, bearing witness that you have seen our light!..."
