This is a simple, prayerful way to celebrate the Eucharist albeit at a distance. We still participate in this mass by way of the prayer and the responses we make. Make this Mass part of your own prayer. Allow the Word of God to shape and fashion you; allow that Spiritual Communion with the Lord to sustain and nourish you at this moment in our lives.

Father Christopher

Welcome to the website of the community based here at St John’s in Bath.

From the evening of Friday 20 March there will be no public Masses in the Church. The Bishops of our country have lifted the obligation for Catholics to attend Sunday Mass. There will be no Sunday or weekday Masses celebrated in the Church. Mass will be celebrated by me each day and it will be streamed to enable those who want to participate in the daily Mass to do so from their own homes. This website as well as our parish’s Facebook page will allow you to keep up-to-date with what’s going on and the ways in which we, as a community, keep together at this difficult time. I will still produce a weekly newsletter by way of keeping in touch with all those who come to this website or those who come into Church.

There is still much we can do – not everything has to be cancelled. We can still pray each day, we can still reflect upon the daily readings of the Mass, we can fall back on the great treasure trove of the Church’s spiritual tradition to keep us rooted and anchored in the Lord. Our Church remains open each day from 8am to 8pm. There is space to pray and to be still. The Blessed Sacrament is reserved in the tabernacle allowing each of us those moments of nearness and closeness to the Lord. We can still light our candles, say our prayers and find peace and solace in the knowledge of God’s presence.

We can also be practical in the help we give to others. We can grow in our awareness of our local community and put love into action by ‘reaching out’ to the vulnerable and those who find themselves isolated because of the Coronavirus. We can live the Gospel by the compassion and the care we show. It’s important that we keep in touch with people and the telephone may well be a real lifeline for many. Use it to keep in touch. I am building up a network of people who are so willing to help in those practical ways. You can always call the parish line - 01225 464471 – if you need some help or assistance at this time. Leave a message if no one is there and someone will respond as soon as they can.

We can still be instruments of peace, of joy, of faith and love in so many ways. We are a community of hope and faith and love, and we can still be proclaimers of the Gospel even when our normal, everyday routine is upset. May God watch over each and every one of us, and remind us – always – that he is near.

God bless you.

Fr Christopher
